Guilty

It had been the worst time of his life. Ten years, and still his wife had never changed. She had cheated twice and even after he had forgiven her both times, she still would bring men to the house. She also did not respect his mother and every time she visited the drama was unbearable. Claire, their daughter had just gotten into preschool, and at this point he thought his wife would have changed to set a better example for their daughter, but no, it never happened. He had three therapists, all who told him the same thing, be patient she will come around but he knew better, and that’s because reality was what he got up to every single day. He had even prayed for peace, but the only peace he had gotten was a peace of mind, and that only happened when he walked out the door and headed for work. Home was hell and he was ready to do anything to put an end to this.

“What is the combination to the safe?” one of the men in masks asked authoritatively, pointing a gun to his head. “Listen, there lies my life savings in that safe, if I give it to you, I will have nothing, take anything else you want just don’t take my savings,” he pleaded. They grabbed the wife and laid her flat on the floor, a gun to her head. “If you don’t open in on my count to three, I will kill her, one…” at that moment a thought struck him. It was one of the darkest things he had ever come up with, this marriage had changed him and now he knew it without a doubt. “Kill her and everything in the safe is yours, plus an extra half million,” he said. “Oh my Lord, No!” his wife cried, “I know it has been a rough ten years but I can reform, please you don’t have to do this,” she pleaded with him. He didn’t listen; all he could think about was life without her in the picture. His wife started to weep softly, almost repentantly, what had she done. For a moment, one of the assailants stood there motionless in deep thought, then he called his colleague aside, he left the woman on the floor. “It doesn’t make sense, why didn’t he wait for the countdown?” he asked his friend. They both thought for a while as they looked at the couple. “He wanted her to know,” the other one finally said. “This is not what we signed up for, it was supposed to be a simple robbery; we go in, rob the safe and walk out. The boss said no deaths whatsoever.” After a while, one of them took the gun and went to the woman who was still crying. “The combination to the safe, now!” he demanded poking her head with the nozzle of the gun. “If she doesn’t die, you leave with nothing; that’s a promise,” he said finally. The assailants looked at each other, then at the man. The woman let out her final cry then the gun went off.
